Frequently asked about Chat with PDF

How long a PDF can I chat with?

Up to ~60,000 characters of extracted text (roughly 30-50 pages of dense prose). Longer documents are truncated; OCR for scanned PDFs is on the roadmap.

Are my PDF contents shared with anyone?

The PDF text is sent to OpenAI's GPT-4o-mini API for processing. OpenAI does not train on API inputs (per their published terms). Inputs are deleted from OpenAI's servers within 30 days of processing.

Why does it cite page numbers?

We extract text with page markers, then the system prompt instructs GPT-4o-mini to cite using `On page N, …`. This grounds answers and lets you verify them in the original document.

Can it answer questions outside the document?

The system prompt explicitly forbids it. If the answer isn't in the context, the model says so rather than making something up.
